Summary

WINNER OF THE INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS BOOK AWARD 2019

Robert Greene is a master guide for millions of readers, distilling ancient wisdom and philosophy into essential texts for seekers of power, understanding and mastery。 Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves。
We are social animals。 Our very lives depend on our relationships with people。 Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far。 Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose。 Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defence。

This book is a well-researched and informative overview on why people have certain tendencies and has lots of solid references to psychology and real-life examples to help drive the points home。 The book itself is gigantic though and could be a great deal more concise。 Still, an enjoyable read with lots of lessons I'll carry forward in my interactions with others。 This book is a well-researched and informative overview on why people have certain tendencies and has lots of solid references to psychology and real-life examples to help drive the points home。 The book itself is gigantic though and could be a great deal more concise。 Still, an enjoyable read with lots of lessons I'll carry forward in my interactions with others。 。。。more

Life changing to say the least, it made me a more resilient person because it very poignantly explains why do people act the way they do, examples always on point, Robert Greene is the recurring zeitgeist of many generations and his work is timeless I would go as far to say he is the modern day sun tzu。

DNF。 I got about 1/4 through and was just kind of。。。 bored。 Robert Greene books (like The 48 Laws of Power) are framed/written as all of this secret knowledge that's hard to attain。 When I read 48 Laws in ~2018 I seem to recall at least a few good insights and gave it 4 stars (but left no review, so who knows)。 But this book seemed a bit too cynical, detached, cold。。。 too sure that Greene's view of the world is the correct one。 Your mileage may vary。 Discovered via Ryan Holiday's books newslette DNF。 I got about 1/4 through and was just kind of。。。 bored。 Robert Greene books (like The 48 Laws of Power) are framed/written as all of this secret knowledge that's hard to attain。 When I read 48 Laws in ~2018 I seem to recall at least a few good insights and gave it 4 stars (but left no review, so who knows)。 But this book seemed a bit too cynical, detached, cold。。。 too sure that Greene's view of the world is the correct one。 Your mileage may vary。 Discovered via Ryan Holiday's books newsletter。 。。。more

People who give bad rating to this book are irrational。 This is a bible for you if you want to learn about human nature, which actually is a must not only if you want to be successful but also if you want some things in life。 It could appear little aggressive to you but it actually isn't, it's just realistic。 Historical examples are little too long sometimes, I'd prefer the shortness just like in The 48 Laws of Power, but it's okay。 Just read it, if you're open minded and not taking things perso People who give bad rating to this book are irrational。 This is a bible for you if you want to learn about human nature, which actually is a must not only if you want to be successful but also if you want some things in life。 It could appear little aggressive to you but it actually isn't, it's just realistic。 Historical examples are little too long sometimes, I'd prefer the shortness just like in The 48 Laws of Power, but it's okay。 Just read it, if you're open minded and not taking things personal, this book shall change your life。 Remember, the more open minded you are, the more you learn。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 I enjoy Robert Greene generally - before reading his books I liked listening to interviews of his。 If you've seen them and know some of his backstory, you can see how his life deeply influenced this book。 It's like your older, more experienced uncle or parent giving you life advice。 I saw that Mr。 Greene has received criticism as to whether his laws are scientific and I do agree, but I also think that the book shouldn't be treated like a scientific book。 I also don't I really enjoyed this book。 I enjoy Robert Greene generally - before reading his books I liked listening to interviews of his。 If you've seen them and know some of his backstory, you can see how his life deeply influenced this book。 It's like your older, more experienced uncle or parent giving you life advice。 I saw that Mr。 Greene has received criticism as to whether his laws are scientific and I do agree, but I also think that the book shouldn't be treated like a scientific book。 I also don't think Robert Greene himself is trying to pass his book as science。 I personally take them as the advice of someone with more life experience than me。 If you watch his interviews, you'll see that many of his rules and laws are just a result of him having experienced certain things (his career in Hollywood, his stroke, etc。) I also really enjoyed the history anecdotes at the beginning of every chapter。 I do have to say that I wondered how historically accurate they were, or whether Mr。 Greene presented things the way most suitable to get his point across。 At some point, I was reading another book as well as this one, and they both mentioned Edison and Tesla and the way things were described were very different。 In any case, I did enjoy learning about those historical figures and what happened in their lives。 Robert Greene is a great writer in the sense that his writing is captivating and interesting。 。。。more

Good read!

I was disappointed in this book, especially after having read The 48 Laws of Power, which I found very insightful。 There were some useful bits of this book but a lot of it was a slog。 To me, the tone felt a bit supercilious and the simplistic explanations of how people's characters were e。g。 so clearly "due to" xyz relationship to their parents during their childhood were too glib。 After just having read The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, I felt like this book on human nature didn't touch on that e I was disappointed in this book, especially after having read The 48 Laws of Power, which I found very insightful。 There were some useful bits of this book but a lot of it was a slog。 To me, the tone felt a bit supercilious and the simplistic explanations of how people's characters were e。g。 so clearly "due to" xyz relationship to their parents during their childhood were too glib。 After just having read The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, I felt like this book on human nature didn't touch on that enough or at least not in a particularly nuanced way。Some chapters were better than others。 The second-to-last one was possibly the best。In terms of reading Robert Greene, I would say, read The 48 Laws of Power and then quit while you're ahead。 。。。more

Is Robert Greene the modern day Machiavelli? Not necessarily, but he sure knows how to tell good stories。 I find the story of Anton Chekhov particularly inspiring。

A Good Look into Human Behavior as it is。The book provides an unfiltered look into the dynamics of human behavior and it’s root causes。 It renders into view the course of human action as it is and doesn’t pull any punches。

Excellent read。 It provided me with much food for thought。 Only regretted not reading this earlier。

"But if you come across any special trait of meanness or stupidity—in life or in literature,—you must be careful not to let it annoy or distress you, but to look upon it merely as an addition to your knowledge—a new fact to be considered in studying the character of humanity。"- Arthur SchopenhauerRobert Greene, in his talks about this book, says that no matter how talented, skilled, beautiful, or anything you may be, and if you don't understand human nature, all of it will be negated and useless "But if you come across any special trait of meanness or stupidity—in life or in literature,—you must be careful not to let it annoy or distress you, but to look upon it merely as an addition to your knowledge—a new fact to be considered in studying the character of humanity。"- Arthur SchopenhauerRobert Greene, in his talks about this book, says that no matter how talented, skilled, beautiful, or anything you may be, and if you don't understand human nature, all of it will be negated and useless。 Reading this book is like looking into a mirror。 It makes you realize that you are genuinely irrational, narcissistic, and aggressive, and it has personally changed the way I view myself and others, but in such a positive way。 This book is about how to overcome this and how to understand human nature。 Although that is an understatement, I would say that this book is incredibly useful to read。 The Laws of Human Nature goes through 18 laws of human behaviour, in each law giving a historical account along with how to see this in others and harness these laws to your benefit。 For example, the third chapter teaches us how to read non-verbal cues in our everyday interactions, and gives you a rundown of specific things to look out for and what they mean。I truly do recommend this book。 It is probably one of the best books that I have read (so far) and I recommend reading it with a pencil, highlighter, and post-it flags, because in almost every paragraph is an insight that is mind-blowing and/or useful and applicable to your daily life in some way。 This book is a slow-burner; it reads more slowly if you want to absorb everything that the book has to offer。 My biased opinions about this book say that there was not a lot I disliked about it, but I do remember not loving how slow it did read。 If you want to finish this book feeling that you've taken something away from it and, in my case, have your worldview changed slightly, then it is definitely a slow-burner。 I also didn't like how this book is not one that you can just pick up and read easily。 It requires that you sit down and engage with it, and the whole time, your brain is ticking as if you're studying a subject, as the book makes it such that you have to churn your memories and connect the traits and strategies with people, experiences, and tendencies of yours to understand its content to the fullest。 But any good non-fiction book requires a similar amount of active engagement with it。 I ended up getting a copy of this book for two of my friends, and it was worth it。 If I can share this changed worldview with anyone else, I would do so; if by any means through a book review。 。。。more

This is one of the deepest books I’ve read。 I appreciate the last chapter on death and the recommendation of constantly contemplating our mortality。 It moved me immensely and I think, will permanently reconfigure how I decide to move about in the world。

It is easy to read and I believe it emphasizes the optimal level of insight a person should have into their own nature in order to reach an optimal level of functioning。。 so I would recommend it。 Also, it made me curious about the other books written by Robert Greene。

Open my eyes to so many of my own inner thoughts, vulnerabilities and irrationalities。Wish I have read this earlier in life。

Aileen Harnett

Just could not do it to myself anymore。 Had to stop reading halfway through。 The ‘laws’ aren’t based in anything concrete, and it feels like he’s decided people are inherently bad and we need to deny our ‘true natures’ and wear masks to deceive people in order to get to the top。 It’s all about manipulation tactics and deception。 Very depressing and negative view of the world。 Not worth the read。
